The paleo diet, also called the caveman diet or the hunter-gatherer diet, is a way of eating based on the kinds of foods available to prehistoric humans in the Paleolithic Era. Proponents of the paleo diet believe it is the healthiest diet that anyone can consume because human bodies have adapted to use those foods. Some believe that it is a healthy diet because it works with an individual's genetics to aid in staying lean, strong and energetic. Those who follow the diet believe that refined foods, trans fats and sugars found in modern diets are responsible for many of the health problems that people experience today.

A major benefit of eating a paleo diet in the modern world is to help hinder the basis for many different types of degenerative and comorbid diseases such as obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other conditions like depression and infertility. Others follow it to either lose pounds or maintain a healthy weight. Benefits also include improved blood lipids and decreased pain in some autoimmune conditions.

To build a paleo diet, adherents should begin with an emphasis on lean proteins such as red meat, poultry, pork, eggs, organ meats, wild fish and shellfish. The diet also emphasizes moderate amounts of fruit and vegetables along with healthy fats from seeds, nuts, olive oil and avocados.

Foods to avoid are all dairy products, grains and products made with grain, beans and legumes, high-omega-6 vegetable oils and iodized salts. Natural sweeteners such as maple syrup and honey are permitted while other types of sweeteners are prohibited.
